MANGALDAI: Jitendra Singh, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and party's State observer along with other senior leaders of the party, including its State president Ripun Bora, MP Gaurav Gogoi and former minister Rockybul Hussain, were arrested by Darrang Police on charges of violation of section 144 of CrPC after participating in the party's scheduled Kishan Tractor Rally in Mangaldai on Saturday.
The senior Congress leaders and their supporters marched forward towards the DC office from Rajiv Bhavan at ward no 2 and tried to overcome the bamboo barricades placed by police near Ram Janaki Temple Chariali. The Congress leaders were taken into custody and carried in buses. Earlier, the leaders addressed party workers at Rajiv Bhavan and severely criticized the BJP-led government, both in the State and the Centre, accusing it of being 'anti-farmer' and 'pro-corporate'.
The Darrang district administration, in an order issued on Friday, had rejected the application of Darrang Congress Committee for permission to hold a Kishan Tractor Rally citing section 144 of CrPC which prohibited assembly of five or more persons in public places, which was already in practice. The arrested Congress leaders were released in the afternoon.
