New Delhi: Three Member of Parliament (MP) from Assam and one from Meghalaya of the Congress Party met the party president Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on 22 December.

The delegation of Congress MP's comprised of Meghalaya Congress president and Shillong MP Vincent Pala, deputy leader of opposition in Lok Sabha – Gaurav Gogoi along with Pradyut Bordoloi and Abdul Khaleque.

This meeting comes at a time when the party's footprint in the north-eastern region seems to be shrinking and is going through a turbulent phase.

The northeast was once considered to be a stronghold of the Grand Old Party for most parts of the post-independence area. But it seems as if that is no longer the case in the current political landscape as it is losing state after state to its biggest political rival the BJP.

Also, the Congress has accused the BJP of toppling its democratically elected governments in Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh by using dirty tricks.

The Grand Old Party had alleged that the BJP intends to remove democratically elected Congress governments by hook or by crook. One such example is the horse trading tactics, the Congress accused.

Of late, the Grand Old Party is facing an exodus from its own party members across the north-east. Several prominent and stalwart leaders have left the Party.

It includes former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma and 12 other MLA's of Meghalaya who had quit the Congress and joined the TMC last month.

In Assam, two of its top leaders, Rupjyoti Kurmi and Sushanta Borgohain, left the party and joined arch rivals BJP.

Both the leaders had expressed their discontent over the current Congress leadership both at the state and national level.

To add to its misery, the Congress had lost some of its bastions in the Upper Assam belt to its rivals in the recently held Assam Assembly Elections 2021.

For the Grand Old Party to revive and return to their glory days, they must put an end to the domino effect.
