Nagaon: The
Congress in Assam slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led coalition
government for police brutality against woman farmers in the state for resisting
the takeover of their farmlands.
Reports from Bamuni Mikirgaon in Nagaon district of central Assam said that the
police accused some women who were opposing the government's bid to evict them
from their farm on December 29, 2020. The government reportedly wants the land
to be handed over to some private companies, the villagers said.

Congress spokesperson Bobita Sarma said on Thursday, "At
a time when the entire country has been standing with the farmers, the BJP
government in Assam has began violent attacks on farmers without even sparing
the women in Nagaon."
Over the past 20 years, approximately 100 indigenous
farmers have been farming rice and bean on a sizeable chunk of land in the
village. they have also been paying government tax, according to the local unit
of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP).
Local AJYCP leader Deep Moni Bora said, "We will not tolerate such
atrocities against farmers. The police cane-charged the protesters - many of
them women - without provocation when farmers are demanding the repeal of
anti-farmer laws brought about by the Centre.
A few farmers have been injured in a clash with the police. However, the district police accused the farmers for the violence and three of them have been arrested.
