GUWAHATI: In a major fillip towards enhancing connectivity in Assam and the Northeast, a project to connect all the hills in Guwahati via ropeways may get rolled out very soon.
This was shared by Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari who is on a three-day visit to the Northeast for assessing implementation of projects under his ministry.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Union Minister announced projects worth Rs. 50,000 crores for Assam for boosting connectivity in the state. These projects include a proposed ring road and Narangi-Kurua bridge in Guwahati, an elevated corridor over the Kaziranga National Park, a bridge connecting Jorhat and Majuli among other projects.
The Union Minister for Road Transport & Highways while addressing the media alongside Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma further shared his thought on an ambitious project to connect Guwahati city by ropeways or airways.
Gadkari said that he has asked CM Sarma to conduct a study on the possibility of connecting all the 'mountains' in Guwahati by either ropeways or airways.
"I am thinking to start a double-decker bus which will carry 200 people via air in Bengaluru, hence if the people of Guwahati also use the ropeway or via the mountains then the problem of traffic congestion would be minimized," added Gadkari.
Moreover, the Union Minister has asked the Assam Government to conduct a comprehensive study on the feasibility of the project. After that, the Centre will try to facilitate the same by considering the proposal from the state.
Earlier on Wednesday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through a tweet thanked Union Minister Gadkari for approving several infrastructure projects which included as many as ten new flyovers and road over bridges over the National Highways. Notably, these new flyovers to be built at a cost of Rs. 738 crores will come up in Kathiatoli, Borghat, Demow, Raha, Baihata, Simlaguri, Bongaigaon Refinery, Chapaguri, Pathsala and Jagiroad.
