SILCHAR: The Assam-Mizoram border is rapidly turning into a hotspot of crimes. On Saturday at around 2.30 pm, police constable Rahim Uddin Khan was severely beaten by a group of miscreants. The incident took place in front of Lailapur police outpost on the 306 Silchar Aizwal National Highway.

A luxury car, coming from Mizoram side, was stopped by Khan during routine checking. As the constable entered the vehicle for conducting search, the passengers locked him inside and started beating him. The car took a turn and started to move fast with Khan inside the vehicle. The police team, however, swung in action immediately and started chasing the car to rescue their colleague. The gang later threw Khan from the car on the road after driving about one kilometre, and fled away. Khan, who was profusely bleeding, was first taken to Dholai Primary Health Centre and later was shifted to Silchar Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.

This is the third such attack in the recent past along the Assam-Mizoram border area. A few days back, Anup Das, the on-duty BDP secretary of Channinghat was attacked in similar style. He later succumbed to his injuries in SMCH. Another such incident happened on March 9 when Kartik Nath, a jawan of 6th Assam Police Battalion who was on duty in the border, was hit by a speeding vehicle. Nath died on the spot.

The Asssm-Mizoram border had earned much notoriety as a safe passage for smuggled narcotic substances. After Himanta Biswa Sarma assumed charge as Chief Minister, the State Government had launched an all-out operation against drugs. Cachar was a safe passage for the smuggling rackets as the district shares inter-state as well as international border with Bangladesh. Both the neighbouring states like Mizoram and Manipur too share border with Myanmar. In recent past, the district police have seized drugs in huge quantity worth at least Rs 1,000 crore.

The recent attacks on the security personnel were a warning bell for the State police as the drug traders and smugglers seem to be in a retaliatory mood.
