MANGALDAI: Armed Branch Constable Upen Deka (50) of Darrang Police has become the first COVID-19 victim of police in Darrang district.

Constable Deka breathed his last on Monday morning at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Earlier, he tested COVID-19 positive in the swab sample test on July 31 and was admitted in the COVID Hospital at Mangaldai Civil Hospital. As he was suffering from diabetes and other ailments, he was shifted to GMCH on August 6 and he passed away on Monday. He was recruited in the Assam Police in 1991 and was known for his dutifulness and humble attitude.

At a function organized at Police Reserve here at Saikiapara on Monday afternoon, Deputy Inspector General of Police of Central Western Range, Brajenjit Singha laid floral wreath on the portrait of Constable Upen Deka and deeply mourned his death. Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan, Additional Superintendent of Police (Border) Pallabi Mazumdar, Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) Mamoni Hazarika and all ranks also offered their last respect in full police style and honour. The funeral will be held at Ulubari Crematorium in Guwahati as per COVID protocol on Tuesday.
