Shillong: Amid the continuing spike in the number of COVID-19 cases across Meghalaya, the state government has prohibited strikes in essential services. The order shall come into force with immediate effect and will remain in force for a period of six months.

Issuing an order to this effect on Wednesday, the Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Home (Political) Department in a notification stated that this prohibition shall be brought into effect "in exercise of the power conferred by sub-Section (1) of Section 3 of the Meghalaya Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1980 (No.23 of 1980) read with the Meghalaya Essential Services Maintenance (Amendment) Act: 2003."

"The order was issued in the public interest and it is necessary to do so in view of the extreme urgency to help contain the possibility of the outbreak and spread of the COVID-19 into the State," read the government's notification.

Meghalaya COVID-19 Update:

Two more COVID-19 related deaths from East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya has taken the total number of COVID fatalities in the state to 49.

Director of Health Services, Dr. Aman War on Wednesday informed that the State registered 176 new COVID-19 cases. With the new cases, the total number of active cases in Meghalaya stands in 1615.

He added that 37 new recoveries were recorded today taking the total number of recovered cases in Meghalaya to 3975.

To date, the State has detected a total of 5639 COVID-19 cases out of which 3975 are recovered, 1615 active, and 49 deceased.
