Guwahati: Owing to the spread of Covid-19 cases, Total Lockdown will be clamped in several localities of Guwahati from 6 pm tomorrow and will remain in effect for 14 days.
This comes moments after Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that 144 coronavirus cases without travel history have been detected in the city since June 15, when the Government's targetted surveillance initiative was kickstarted. Meanwhile, the number of cases in the urban area has zoomed past 400.
Shortly, the Government is expected to announce details of localities where lockdown will be clamped shortly. Various localities in Jalukbari, Maligaon, Pandu, Machkhowa, Fancy Bazaar, Dhirenpara, and Fathasil Ambari will be placed under total lockdown from 6 pm tomorrow, reports said.
Meanwhile, Assam health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the health department has recommended ward-wise lockdown in Guwahati to concentrate the number of cases in the affected areas.
Sarma said that the connection with Fancy Bazar is a 'common thread' in these cases. "Fancy Bazar is a common cause of concern. Additionally, Pandu, Maligaon, Machkhowa, Fancy Bazar, and the 15, 16 wards have emerged as coronavirus hotspots in the city", he said.
"The decision will be taken by Kamrup Metropolitan district administration," Dr. Sarma said at a press meet on Monday. 7 wards, Sarma said, have emerged as sites of concern for the Assam Health department in the aftermath of the outbreak. "These are Ward no. 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 15, and 16", Sarma informed, adding that these areas have become "a matter of great concern" for the Assam health department.
