TANGLA: From showering petals from a chopper to felicitation of the COVID warriors, the State Government and Health Department left no stone unturned to praise the efforts of the COVID warriors, including cleaners and ward boys who worked round-the-clock, risking their lives to treat the people infected with COVID-19 as well as people undergoing mandatory quarantine. But how serious is the government in disbursement of remuneration to the workers?
The temporary cleaners of Harisinga Revenue Circle in Udalguri district has alleged non-payment of wages. Thirty-two cleaning staff who worked day and night at various COVID Care centres and quarantine centres during the time of crisis, have alleged that they have not been paid salary for 3-4 months by the authorities. The workers alleged that they were temporarily engaged by the Joint Director of Health and Services, Udalguri and they were promised remuneration of Rs 15,000 per month and were paid for only three months.
"We have informed the officials concerned regarding the non-payment of salary but the authorities have not taken any initiative and we are still deprived of our salary of 3-4 months," alleged Bipul Talukdar, a cleaner who worked in Sonaigaon COVID Care Centre. The temporary cleaners of Harisinga Revenue Circle in Udalguri district also submitted a memorandum to State Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma to demand regularization of their jobs.
