TEZPUR: A series of successful raids was conducted against drugs, illegal gambling, cattle smuggling, illicit liquor and ganja in different parts of the Sonitpur district recently.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of Sonitpur police under the supervision of Sushanta Biswa Sarma, Superintendent of Police, and Additional SP, (Headquarters) Madhurima Das seized 15 kg ganja and three persons were apprehended in this connection near Napam area under Tezpur Police station. They have been identified as Abdul Jalil (45), Sahjahan Ali (44) and Abdul Rahman (38).

In another raid conducted by Sonitpur police along with 12th A P Battalion personnel at Batamari area, NH-37, two persons were arrested and two soap cases containing 20 gm suspected heroine were recovered from their possession. Police also seized a bike bearing registration number AS-12-D-3477. The arrested were identified as Nur Hussain (32), resident of Madhya Bagamur village under Samaguri PS in Nagaon district, and Nur Ali (32) resident of Koroiani Nepali Gaon under Tezpur Police station.

In yet another incident of cow smuggling, IC Singari under Dhekiajuli PS in Sonitpur district conducted an operation and recovered 12 cattle along with two vehicles bearing registration numbers AS12BC 3558 and AS12AC 8170. Sonitpur Police also seized a vehicle bearing registration number AR 04 5210 at Rehabari area under Charidwar PS and recovered 12 cartons of beer and 9 cartons of wine. The driver of the vehicles managed to flee, police officials said.
