Guwahati: Two candidates out of four of BJP in Assam for Assam by poll election have pending criminal cases against them.

BJP has filed their name as a candidate for the upcoming Assam by poll.

The two candidates are Mariani candidate Rupjyoti Kurmi, who had joined BJP from Congress in June, and Bhabanipur candidate Phanidhar Talukdar, who had joined BJP from AIUDF in September.

In the name of Rupjyoti, has two criminal cases with Paltan bazaar police station under section 153(A) of IPC however, police yet to start interrogation and another defamation case under U/S 499/500/501 of IPC by one Santanu Puzari based on Kurmi's another TV interview in which Kurmi had allegedly made some defamatory comments.

Among these two cases, one case is being heard at CJM Jorhat.

On the other hand, Phanidhar Talukdar, former Bhabanipur MLA from AIUDF, has some serious land grabbing allegations against him and cases booked under section 120(B)/468/406 of IPC and section 138 of N.I. act.

In a press release issued by the All India Congress Committee, the Congress party announced the names of the candidates who will be contesting in the Assam Assembly by-polls in three assembly constituencies. The candidature of the three candidates was approved by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. The press release read, "The Congress President Sonia Gandhi has approved the proposals for the candidature of the following persons to contest the ensuing Assam Assembly bye-elections as Congress candidates from the states mentioned below.".
