Cyclone SItrang Causes Damages in Assam and Other Northeastern States

Although the heavy rains have subsided in several parts of the region, the sky still remains overcast with short spells of light rain.

GUWAHATI: Cyclone Sitrang caused heavy rains and winds in Northeast India. It took down several houses, damaged telecommunication and power networks and damaged crops across the region on Monday and Tuesday. Several parts of the capital city of Guwahati faced water logging conditions.

The rains subsided in large parts of the region on Wednesday but the sky still remains overcast. Also, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more rains across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh till October 27.

Conditions in several parts of Assam remain grim as almost 1100 people living in 83 villages have been affected by the rains caused by the cyclonic disturbance Sitrang over the last. Numerous homes got damaged amid Cyclone Sitrang, which triggered heavy rainfall and a storm across the state. Assam State Disaster Management Authority put the number of affected people at 1146.

Although the Guwahati Airport remained fully functional during the storm, the ones in Agartala, Shillong and Aizawl were closed due to problems in visibility. Six flights connecting Shillong to Silchar, Dibrugarh and Kolkata were cancelled on Tuesday. An Aizawl - Shillong flight was also cancelled amidst visibility problems. Seven flights connecting Agartala to other destinations were cancelled on Monday.

In the state of Mizoram, multiple houses including a newly constructed one were damaged in the Mamit district bordering Tripura late Monday. In Siaha, three private residences and two relief camps for Myanmar refugees were damaged by heavy rain on Tuesday. All schools in Aizawl and southern Mizoram's Lunglei and Serchhip districts declared a holiday on Tuesday after warnings of heavy rainfall.

Uprooted trees disrupted the traffic in multiple locations of the region including Guwahati. They also severed electricity and telecommunication cables leading to the failure of mobile phone networks in several places. The power department also disconnected supplies to avoid any mishaps in the region.
