LAKHIMPUR: The election to the Deori Autonomous Council (DAC) concluded in Lakhimpur district with the experience of two untoward incidents on Tuesday.
The first report of such incident came from the polling station set up at Panbari Navoday Girls' High School under No. 19 Kinapothar Constituency (ST). In the polling station concerned, Bihpuria MLA Dr. Amiya Kumar Bhuyan had to face public wrath for the allegation of distributing cash for BJP candidate Bishnu Kumar Deori. As per report, the MLA arrived at the polling station in the mid-day and then he allegedly distributed cash of Rs. 500 to each of women voters. On witnessing it, the opposition activists made hue and cry their. Then a section of irate women protested, which made him drive away from the place.
On the other hand, the Presiding Officer at the Polling Station set up at Binapani Janajati ME School at Bhogpur under No. 18 Pisala Constituency (ST, Woman) had to face public wrath for the alleged charge of stamping the ballot papers of some illiterate voters in favour of the ruling party while instructing the voters how to cast vote. Following the allegation a tensed situation prevailed for a while with the report of manhandle issue between ruling and opposition parties. It led disruption in the polling. However, Returning Officer-cum-ADC Geetalee Duworah along with administrative officers and security personnel arrived at the polling station and brought the situation under control. Later polling resumed and it concluded peacefully.
Except for these two incidents, the overall situation regarding the election concerned in the DAC constituencies under Lakhimpur district was peaceful. The voters' turnout in the election in the district is 77.15 per cent as per report found from DIPRO Mandira Chayengiya.
Notably, 7 DAC constituencies, out of 22, fall under Lakhimpur district. These constituencies are No. 15 Bor Deori Constituency (ST), No. 16 Bahgora Constituency (ST, Woman), No. 17 Kachikota Constituency (ST), No. 18 Pisala Constituency (ST, Woman), No. 19 Kina Pothar Constituency (ST), No. 20 Bongalmora Constituency (ST) and No. 21 Gabharu Tunijan Constituency (ST). Six BJP candidates, one AGP candidates, three Congress candidates, two Aam Aadmi Party candidates and eleven independent candidates are in fray covering these seven constituencies.
On the other hand, polling was also peaceful in the five DAC constituencies under Dhemaji district. In the end of polling, the overall voters turnout in Dhemaji district is overall - 79.28 per cent. As per report, 79.38 per cent voters exercised their franchise in Sissiborgaon constituency, 75.06 per cent in Sripani, 81.01 per cent in Bordoloni, 83.09 per cent in Gogamukh and 83.26 per cent in Jonai. Five Congress candidates, four BJP candidates, one AGP candidate, three JPP candidates, two AAP candidates and four independent candidates are in contest in Dhemaji district.
