Darrang becomes new smuggling route of illegal coal

Mangaldai: The Darrang Police, in a major crackdown against the illegal inter-State racket of ‘black gold’ transported through the district, seized six multi-axle trucks loaded with coal allegedly moving without valid documents from Tinsukia to the States of UP, Bihar and Haryana.

On Saturday night, acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ), Mamoni Hazarika intercepted several coal-laden trucks on NH-15 at Dalgaon and seized six trucks, of which five were registered in UP with registration numbers UP 42 BT 4222, UP 42 BT 2811, UP 42 BT 4552, UP 15 DT 7764, UP 15 DT 8168, and the other in Haryana with registration number HR 37 D 7896, on charges of illegal transportation of coal.

“The operation was carried out in a very prompt manner following the instruction of Darrang Superintendent of Police Amrit Kr. Bhuyan. Six trucks carrying consignment of coal from Coal India Ltd without official seal and signature have been detected and subsequently legal action has been initiated as per provision of the IPC and Mines and Mineral Act,” said DSP Hazarika while talking to The Sentinel.

A case (No. 62 / 2019) U/S 120 (B) / 420 / 379 /411 IPC R/W section 25 (4) Mines & Mineral Act 1957 has already been registered in Dalgaon PS in this connection. Darrang Police has recently started crackdown against the illegal pilferage of diesel and petrol from oil tankers and dumpers with illegal consignment of sand. In one such operation led by DSP Hazarika, nearly 1,500 litres of pilferage diesel were seized from a roadside dhaba at Besimari while in another operation, a dumper loaded with fresh sand without valid TP and challan was seized from Pathorighat outpost area. It was later handed over to the forest.
