MANGALDAI: “Minutes of the meetings should never be confined to the proceedings of the meetings, the minutes must be implemented in to fruitful action,” said Darrang Deputy Commissioner Munindra Nath Ngatey while taking a serious note of the increasing number of road accidents in the Darrang district.

Addressing the first meeting of the District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) at the conference hall of the DC’s office on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner Ngatey also expressed serious concern over the rampant violation of the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act by a section of unruly drivers of passenger service buses, trucks, dumpers and tractors. He also laid stress on launching a mass awareness campaign in all the academic institutions to create awareness among the students on road safety measures and wearing of helmets while riding the two wheelers.

In the meeting, the District Transport Officer of Darrang apprised that in the year 2021, Darrang district witnessed the tragic death of 97 persons in the total number of 245 road accidents in which 171 persons sustained injuries. On the contrary, the year 2022 marked the death of 45 persons in 255 road accidents in which 166 persons sustained injuries. The meeting also discussed the unabated movement of e-rickshaws on the National Highway and their entry in the town area, which is also a gross violation of the provisions of the MV Act.

Taking part in the meeting, Superintendent of Police Prasanta Saikia spoke about the road safety arrangements initiated by the Traffic Wing of police and asked the civic bodies of Mangaldai, Kharupetia and Sipajhar to arrange the parking areas. He also asked the civic bodies to clear all the pavements from the vendors and the hoardings.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Sanjeeb Bora, Circle Officers Sameer Choudhury of Dalgaon and Kamaljeet Sarma of Sipajhar, officiating Inspector of Schools Monika Borgohain Deka, officials of PWD (Roads), NH and Bus Owners Association also took part in the meeting.
