MANGALDAI: The Darrang District Village Defence Organization has successfully celebrated the VDP (Village Defence Party) Day to mark the 72nd Foundation Day of Assam Village Defence Organization with a two-day-long detailed programme at Boinaoja Pothar at Aulachowka near here on February 6 and 7.

Deputy Adviser of Village Defence Organization Mukut Saikia marked the beginning of the Day by unfurling the VDP flag. It was followed by lighting of earthen lamp and homage paying ceremony by Additional Superintendent of Police (HQ) Ujjwal Pratim Barua. The second day's programme was kicked off with a free medical camp and blood donation camp inaugurated by Deputy Superintendent of Police (HQ) Mamani Hazarika.

In the open session on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah taking part as the chief guest recalled the yeoman's service of the VDP personnel with utmost dedication and devotion during the hour of crisis particularly during the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic and congratulated them. "The VDP men in Darrang under the dynamic leadership of Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan have been able to make a benchmark in the State in extending a helping hand with positive attitude towards the administration and police. I am proud of our VDP team," said Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah.

The District Village Defence Organization in the function offered hearty felicitation with a letter of citation and a Xarai to Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan on being conferred with the prestigious 'Police Medal for Meritorious Service' by Government of India on the eve of the Republic Day. Appreciating the felicitation, Bhuyan expressed his gratitude to the VDP men and also congratulated them for their active role in the drive against anti-social activities including the illegal trade of narcotic drugs and country liquor. Adviser of State Village Defence Organization Partha Pratim Das also took part in the open session as a guest of honour. Earlier Deputy Adviser Mukut Saikia accorded a warm welcome to the guests and all the VDP men in his welcome speech and also offered vote of thanks in the function anchored by Bhargab Kumar Das.

In the function, four non-governmental organizations namely Roktadhara; Marwari Yuba Mancha, Kharupetia; Unity - We the Blood Donors; and Crystal Vision actively involved with blood donation and twenty blood donors were also felicitated.

Significantly three kids namely 8-year-old Dikshit Barua, 10-year-old Jyotirmoy Barua and 12-year-old Biman Barua all from Sipajhar successfully completed a 20-km marathon that was organized as a part of the programme. Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah on seeing the extraordinary talent of these three future athletes felicitated them in the open session and declared to reward them with Rs 2,000 each. Both the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police also felicitated a little singer Mayuri Nath who enthralled the audience with her excellent musical performance in the function.
