MANGALDAI: Taking a serious note on the alarmingly increasing number of road accidents and rampant violation of traffic rules, the district administration of Darrang has instructed the police, District Transport department, National Highway wing of PWD and civic bodies to take up stringent action on the erring persons.

Few days back, the district administration convened a meeting with the officials of the District Transport department, police, civic bodies and the PWD (NH) and laid stress on the need for strict enforcement of road safety measures and traffic rules. Talking to The Sentinel, District Transport Officer Kumar Sanjib Krishna informed that the accident-prone zones or stretches would be earmarked and required arrangements would also be taken up to reduce the quantum of road accidents.

“The whimsical parking of passenger vehicles on the stretch of NH 15, particularly in the civic body areas, parking of all vehicles, including two wheelers on ‘No Parking Zone’, driving without helmet and seat belt will be severally dealt with and penalty will also be imposed on the violators,” he added.

Motor Vehicle Inspector Padma Lochan Hazarika, while talking to mediapersons, informed that the District Transport Department, as per the instructions from the Commissioner of Transport and Deputy Commissioner of Darrang, has taken up the initiative to organize a series of awareness campaigns throughout the district with active cooperation from the Bus Owners’ Association, media organizations, civic bodies and non-government organizations. The cadets of NCC would also be engaged in traffic awareness.

On the other hand, as per instruction of the Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan, the Traffic wing of Mangaldai Police Station has swung into action to streamline the traffic arrangements in Mangaldai town since Thursday morning. Taking a tough stand on traffic rule violators, the police took away the two wheelers and cars parked in ‘No Parking Zone’ on the busy thoroughfares of the district headquarters town. The police have appealed to citizens to park their vehicles in the notified parking place only. Similarly, the District Transport department is also going to take action on reckless drivers of dumpers, JCBs and tractors.

Various organizations, including Mangaldai Media Circle, have welcomed the recent move of the district police to streamline smooth traffic arrangement. Secretary of Mangaldai Media Circle, Mayukh Goswami and social activist Ganesh Dutta, while appreciating the initiative of the police and the Transport department, appealed to the district administration to make alternative arrangement in the ever busy LNB Road by constructing an alternative road along the abandoned Mangaldai River.
