MANGALDAI: Darrang police have arrested a self-styled mufti, along with a village headman and two other persons, in connection with the alleged suicide committed by a 14-year-old minor girl on Sunday.

According to the complaint, 34-year old Ahi Mandal of Grandland Bagicha under Dhula Police Station in the Darrang district eloped with a minor girl of the same village on August 23. The self-styled mufti, Makibar Rahman Ajhari, without informing the police, arranged a village trial in his residence and passed the judgment to outcaste both the girl and the man from the society.

The minor girl, who was pregnant, finding no alternative, committed suicide by hanging in her residence. Village headman Noimuddin Ahmed and villagers Khabir Uddin and Jiarul Hoque also took part in the village trial. Superintendent of Police Prakash Sonowal, on being informed of the suicide, instructed the Dhula Police for immediate arrest of all the accused persons involved in it. The Dhula Police immediately registered a case vide no 192/2023 under section 376 (1)/306 of Indian Penal Code read with section 6 of POCSO Act and arrested all the accused persons, including the self-styled mufti.

‘Mufti’ Makibar Rahman Azhari was a regular participant in the talk shows aired by a section of satellite channels.
