Darrang Police bust gang of robbers in Mangaldai

MANGALDAI: A team of Mangaldai Police Station on Wednesday busted a gang of notorious criminals in a luxury car in the heart of the Mangaldai town, thereby foiling a well-organized attempt to robbery.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of night patrolling police team at around 3.30 am, spotted a Swift Dzire car bearing registration no AS13G-7907 parked suspiciously on the by-lane in front of Gandhi Maidan at Mangaldai with several passengers inside it. Smelling some foul, the police team, led by the in-charge of the Town Branch of Mangaldai Police Station, recovered several items, including a khukri, specially designed iron bars and torch light.

The gang immediately tried to flee from the police but police team caught hold of five of them. A couple of others managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Later during preliminary interrogation, the arrested criminals reportedly confessed before police that they were about to implement their plan of robbery in the town.

Meanwhile, talking to this correspondent, Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan said that a serious crime had been averted with the arrest of these notorious criminals. “This notorious gang is suspected to be involved in several cases of crimes, including robbery, and looting in commercial establishments in recent times and interrogations are on to ascertain the truth,” he added.

They have been identified as Akbor Ali (28) of No 2 Baghpuri village of Mangaldai, Bipul Dutta (28) of Mowamari of Mangaldai, Hasmat Ali (24) of Balabari, of Dhula, Sadek Ali (23) of Ojagaon of Dhula and Abbash Ali (33) of Besimari of Dalgaon.
