Dibrugarh: Stepping towards a ‘Zero Waste Dibrugarh’, Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha formally launched ‘Adopt Zero Waste Lifestyle’, an orientation-cum-awareness programme, on Saturday.

The initiative has been taken by the district administration in association with PHED to minimize municipal waste and to convert waste to resource. In this connection, a meeting was held at the conference hall of the DC office in the presence of MLA Prasanta Phukan; District Development Commissioner Sanjoy Dutta and Superintendent of Police Gautam Bora, among others.

Addressing the meeting, Jha highlighted the importance of the initiative in reducing municipal waste by converting waste to resource. He said, “The quantum of municipal solid waste generated in Dibrugarh is estimated to be 50-60 metric tonnes per day, out of which, 75 per cent to 80 per cent is biodegradable and 20 per cent to 25 per cent is non-biodegradable waste. We can segregate household waste at source and produce compost out of the waste. But we mix all biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and it enhances the volume of municipal waste. By this orientation-cum-awareness programme, we want to make people aware of the ways that leads to a zero waste lifestyle.”

He added, “It is like a consultancy service. Whoever wants to adopt zero waste lifestyle, they may contact us through WhatsApp number 6004-04251 or mail us at phedibzerowaste@gmail.com. The District Solid Waste Management team constituted by the district administration and PHED for providing counselling on methods to manage waste at household level will visit their home as per their convenience.”
