DHUBRI: The first death anniversary of the lone photojournalist of erstwhile Goalpara district, Tapan Kumar Roy, was observed on Monday. At the beginning of the day-long programme, photo exhibition of Roy’s selective pieces-cum-photo contest was formally inaugurated by veteran journalist, Prof (Rtd), Girindra Nath Goswami.
In a simple function held on the occasion, Goswami recalled the days with Roy when they used to move to different parts of the erstwhile Goalpara district to collect news. “Tapan Kumar Roy was an enthusiastic photo-journalist and perhaps the only in lower Assam districts as I never saw a photo-journalist in those days elsewhere in Assam during the 70s, except in Guwahati,” Goswami reminisced. Goswami said that Roy was a benevolent and amiable person and received a number of awards for his works.
Senior journalist Bijoy Kumar Sharma, while addressing the memorial meeting, also praised the outstanding quality of Roy’s photography and recalled how he was inspired to see Roy taking a photo of the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi, President Gyani Jail Singh, former Prime Minister Morarji Desai, Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal, Amitabh Bachchan and many other political leaders and stalwarts in other fields of the country and State. Photos of young and budding photographers who took part in the contest were also exhibited.
Billu Basak, Swastik Sarkar, and Rakesh Chandra Sarkar were adjudged first, second and third winners respectively by a panel of judges, while an appreciation certificate was given to Anandini Sharma.
The certificates along with citations were formally distributed by another veteran journalist, Om Prakash Todi, and secretary of the memorial committee, Chiranjib Roy at a function held in the evening.
