GAURISAGAR: The death of the prominent All Tai Ahom Students' Union (ATASU) leader Jayanta Handique (43) in a tragic road accident in Hanhchora on Saturday night was mourned by a host of organizations. Handique was the president of the ATASU district unit. Formerly the central committee secretary, he was associated with almost all socio-cultural activities in the district. The ATASU district unit is observing three-day mourning, informed the secretary of the central committee Manoj Gogoi. Brihattar Sivasagar Press Club in a meeting held on Monday mourned the leader's death. Others that condoled his death include Sivasagar Sports Association, Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Brihattar Asomiya Yuva Parishad, Ujani Asom Muslim Kalyan Parishad, Aikya, Rangpur Xahitya Xabha, Barowari Sanskritic Mancha, AASU, Griffon, and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti. Jayanta Handique died on the way to the hospital after his Maruti Car (As 04 C 9495) skidded off the road and fell in a muddy ditch due to heavy fog when he was on his way home at Hanhchora Boka Nagar. He is survived by his wife, mother, and two sisters.
