LAKHIMPUR: The death of Brajendra Nath Sarmah Baruah, the eminent educationist, pioneer of commerce education in North Assam and retired Principal of Lakhimpur Commerce College, has been widely mourned in the Lakhimpur district.

The educationist succumbed to COVID-19 on Friday while undergoing treatment at a private-sector nursing home in Guwahati.

He was 84. Born in 1937 in North Lakhimpur, Sarma Baruah did his B.Com from City College, Calcutta in 1959 and M.Com from Benaras Hindu University in 1962. He joined Darrang College as a professor in 1962 first and then moved to become the Principal of the newly founded Lakhimpur Commerce College in 1972, from where he retired in 1998. As a good administrator, he shaped Lakhimpur Commerce College as one of the noted academic institutions of the State in the commerce stream. During the term of his service, the college also produced several sports personalities who brought laurels to the district by participating and winning prizes in national level sports events.

He was ill for some complicacy and then admitted to the private hospital in Guwahati but released upon getting well. However, he succumbed to COVID-19 while recovering from his earlier ailments. He was cremated in Guwahati following the COVID-19 protocols later on. Sarma Baruah leaves behind his wife and two sons.

Lakhimpur Commerce College expressed profound grief at his demise on Sunday. In a condolence message, the teachers and office staff of the college said that the contribution of BN Sarma Baruah to the academic and public life of Lakhimpur would remain forever and paid tributes to his departed soul. They also conveyed their deepest condolences to the bereaved family. Besides the college, several institutions, organizations, individuals mourned over the death of the educationist and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
