TANGLA: The road bridge over River Nonai, connecting Tangla town with Kukurakata and its neighbouring villages has become a trap, lying unattended for months now, causing distress to the commuters. A corner of the concrete bridge has collapsed creating a massive hole that is deemed to be a veritable death trap. While the authorities have temporarily put sandbags over it, locals, however, have expressed concern urging for a permanent concrete fixture.
The vital road bridge over River Nonai, along the Tangla-Bhergaon road of Tangla town, connects Bhergaon subdivision to the town but to the utter dismay of the locals, the PWD Road authorities have turned a blind eye towards it, making the people vulnerable to major accidents. "The death trap is lying naked posing serious threat without any warning signs," said Jitu Pathak, a college student.
Sources said that the bridge was facing threat, owing to the illegal sand mining-induced erosion of river edges from the close vicinity of its piers. The bridge is used by a number of commuters, especially students and traders on a daily basis. To avert major accidents, the local people have exhorted the authorities concerned to take first-hand measures and repair the part at the earliest. They have also appealed to the local administration to take necessary measures specifically ahead of the monsoon season.
