Debabrata Saikia takes stock of the situation in Cachar

SILCHAR: Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia took stock of the situation along the Assam-Mizoram inter-state border in Cachar district on Sunday.

After visiting the border areas in the morning, Saikia held a meeting with Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli, Superintendent of Police, BhanwarLalMeena and other senior officials at the Deputy Commissioner's office chamber in the afternoon.

The Leader of the Opposition placed some suggestions following his visit to the border areas to the district administration for easing tension and restoring normalcy along the inter-state border.

Saikia said that the Mizoram Government has set up BoPs inside Assam territory which should be taken immediate care of. The Leader of the Opposition sought verification of border 'as encroachment has taken place within the Assam territory by Mizoram on the NH beyond Vairengte'.

He asked the administration to take steps for reconstruction of schools destroyed by Mizo miscreants.

Saikia underscored the need for intensifying patrolling by police personnel at Assam-Mizoram border to instill confidence among the local people.

He urged the administration to extend financial assistance to the injured persons and relief to the 22 families whose houses were reduced to ashes by Mizo miscreants. In this context, he suggested allocation under the PradhanMantriAwasYojana to the affected families to build their dwelling units.

Saikia urged the administration to issue land pattas to the victimized persons.

He urged the state government to provide government job to the kith of the deceased person. The Leader of the Opposition also demanded compensation from the Mizoram Government for custodial death.

Deputy Commissioner, Jalli apprised the Leader of the Opposition about the slew of steps taken by the district administration and the State government, including setting up of three BoPs and regular meetings and communique with her Kolasib counterpart and interactions with the local people to bring back peace and tranquility along the inter-state border.

Superintendent of Police, Meena informed the Leader of the Opposition that a detailed report on the prevailing situation along the border has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The meeting that lasted for around 35 to 40 was attended by DFO, SunnideoChoudhury, MLA, Karimganj, KamalakhyaPurkayastha, former MLA, Siddique Ahmed, former minister, Ajit Singh and former MP, Silchar, Sushmita Dev.

Saikia handed over Rs.15,000 to the kith of IntazulLaskar who was abducted and killed by Mizo miscreants and Rs.10,000 to the injured person.

The Leader of the Opposition, who is on a two-day visit to Barak Valley will visit Medicherra and ChotaBobirbond border areas of Karimganj district along the Assam-Mizoram inter-state border and take stock of the border situation in a meeting with the district administration on Monday.
