LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district body of Voters' Party International (VPI) initiated agitation programme in Lakhimpur district demanding the declaration of flood problem of Assam as a national problem.
Regarding the issue, as many as thousand activists of the party, led by Lakhimpur district unit president Fazlur Rahman and secretary Rabindra Chungkrang, carried out a protest rally in North Lakhimpur town on Thursday under the banner of Federation for Economic Freedom Movement. By staging the agitation programme, the party demanded the Union and State governments to declare the flood problem of Assam as national problem or to deposit Rs 6000 in the account of each voter under the flood-affected areas of the State as votership amount.
In order to resolve the flood problem permanently, VPI demanded to constitute Joint Action Committee with the representatives of civil society and the State Government.
Initiating the same agitation programme, VPI further demanded the supervision of the Supreme Court on the Foreigners Tribunals regarding the legal activities of those citizens who had been excluded from the final NRC published on August 31. The party demanded the appointment of the judges of the Foreigners Tribunals through the Supreme Court for the sake of ensuring impartiality and pressure-free judgements. Through the protest programme, the party further demanded the resolve some crucial problems of Lakhimpur district too, such as to start the construction work of the Lakhimpur and Majuli connecting bridge immediately, to stop the deforestation going on due to the Tariyani Quarry at Boginadi, to take action against the forest officers and employees who were involved in running the quarries violating environmental laws, to develop footpaths by the road connecting North Lakhimpur town to North Lakhimpur Civil Hospital and to complete the Lakhimpur Medical College on time.
Participating in the agitation programme, VPI State president Lalit Pegu came down heavily on the State and Union governments regarding the aforesaid issues. "Both governments have maintained an unmoved attitude with regard to declaring the flood problem of Assam as national problem despite the consecutive demands raised by almost all parties and organizations of the State. The government allows the people of the State to die or suffer due to flood. Even after that, the political leaders of the State are doing politics in the name of language and religion. It is unfortunate," said the VPI State president while addressing the protesters.
While conducting the rally, the protesters rocked the environment shouting various slogans. VPI State members Abu Sama and Shahidur Rahman also took part in the agitation programme. In support of the demands, the Lakhimpur unit of VPI submitted separate memoranda to the Prime Minister and to the Chief Minister of the State, Deputy Commissioner of Lakhimpur and the Divisional Forest Officer of the district.
Regarding the anomalies of the Tariyani Quarry, Lakhimpur unit of VPI will stage dharna on September 30 at the Kadam Circle Office premises at Boginadi, informed Fazlur Rahman through a press release.
