Deer meat recovered, 4 held at Panbari Animal Corridor in Numaligarh

Numaligarh: After receiving inputs about trafficking of deer meat from the flooded Kaziranga National Park (KNP), KNP authorities were on high alert on Monday. ‘Naka-checking’ was done at Panbari Animal Corridor. In the joint effort, CRPF personnel and forest personnel were deployed in the check-post under the leadership of Arun Vignesh, Assistant Conservator of Forest, Kaziranga National Park. Every vehicle coming towards Bokakhat was checked.

A Scooty fled the check-post with high speed. The deployed team followed the Scooty immediately and apprehended two persons red-handed with deer meat weighing almost 4 kg. The arrested persons have been identified as Luhit Bora and Arup Rowtia of Gormurh area of Bokakhat. They were brought to the forest camp near Panbari along with the Scooty (registration no-AS-05-K-8372).

SPDO Bokakhat, Kalyan Kumar Das reached the spot and started interrogation of the detained suspects. After the interrogation, based on information received from the two, police succeeded in catching two more persons from Geleki area. They have been identified as Harisingh Rajput and Nirmal Rajput. Both were arrested from their house. Police also recovered 5 kg deer meat and a machete used for chopping the meat from their house.

During flood in KNP, many animals like deer, buffaloes and elephants enter human-populated areas for shelter and miscreants kill them. Around 30 deer, two rhinos and other animals have died for natural and man-made causes in this year’s flood at Kaziranga so far.
