LAKHIMPUR: Unabated deforestation and destruction of forest resources continued by a section of dishonest people and businessmen has provoked massive reaction among the people in Dhakuakhana subdivision of Lakhimpur district. Especially, a large racket of such people in larger Subansiri area of the subdivision has continued the rampant cutting of bamboos and other invaluable trees and transporting them even to Arunachal Pradesh in addition to different places under the district through the rural roads under the MornaiBebejia area.

In this regard, the Subansiri regional unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) alleged that these forest resources had been transported by lots of vehicles like tractors, trucks day by day without any challan or legal documents.

In addition to them, according to the organization, a section of people has polluted the social environment of the area with illegal sale of local and imported liquors and sponsoring gambling at BebejiaChariali. On the other hand, another racket of dishonest people in the area has continued the collection of cashes from Rs 400 to Rs 500 from the common people with the temptation of providing them Aadhaar card easily.

Regarding this issues, the Subansiri regional unit of AASU and journalist HariPrashadChutiya submitted separate memoranda to Dhakuakhana SDO (Civil) Javir Rahul Suresh on Saturday. Subansiri AASU president MadhavSaikia, general secretary GouriSankarBaruah and the journalist demanded the subdivisional and district administration to initiate strict action against those who were involved in deforestation and illegal trade of forest resources, selling of illegal liquors and collecting cashes in the name of Aadhaar card.
