LAKHIMPUR: The anti-big river dam activist organizations have taken to the street once again after the overflown water in the catchment area of contentious Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP), being constructed by NHPC at Gerukamukh along Assam-Arunachal border area in Dhemaji district, has created massive flood havoc in Lakhimpur district by rolling over the main dam of the project. Opposing to the controversial project, which at present has failed to tackle even minor natural disasters like landslide and heavy rainfall, the Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district units of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) initiated massive protest programme on Friday. On that day, by burning the effigies of Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union Power Minister RK Singh and NHPC, the organization demanded the immediate closure of the project.
Similarly, the activists of the Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district units of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) rocked Gerukamukh and Gogamukh demonstrating strong protest on Saturday. The activists of the organization, in the presence of AJYCP State secretary Polash Changmai burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to demand the closure of the mega river dam project. Notably, NHPC on Saturday prevented an AJYCP delegation, led by Polash Changmai, along with the media persons, with the help of CISF and Assam Police personnel, at the main gate from visiting the SLHP site. This delegation and media persons arrived at Gerukamukh to stock the latest situation in SLHP site.
