Demand for probe in Fast Track Court, compensation to Raha victim's family

BOKAJAN: Various social organizations in Karbi Anglong have condemned the alleged murder of a 12-year old girl at Raha in Nagaon district on April 22. The incident has sent shockwaves throughout the State and has also received widespread condemnation from various quarters in Assam, particularly in the Karbi Anglong district.

The victim girl, Sumila Ronghangpi was working as a domestic help in the house of Prakash Borthakur of Raha, Nagaon since the past four years. She was the daughter of Sarthe Ronghang and Basapi Kropi of Sar Kro Kudam Ronghang village under Baithalangso Police Station in West Karbi Anglong.

Both Prakash Chandra Borthakur and his son Nayan Jyoti Borthakur were arrested and a case has been registered with Nagaon police station case no. 97/2021 under Section 120B/302 of IPC.

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Karbi Anglong district committee has strongly condemned the Raha incident in which the 12-year old minor girl was allegedly charred to death by her employer. The organization demanded justice and also lit candles in memory of the departed soul.

President of AJYCP, Jitu Phukon condemned the killing of the minor and said that the father-son duo should be brought to justice. AJYCP also demanded adequate compensation for the victim's kin.

Karbi Students Association led by president Simeon Rongphar, Karbi Anglong Women Justice Forum and United Karbi Anglong Women Association have demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident to punish the culprits. The organizations demanded that the case be heard by a Fast Track Court and a compensation of Rs 20 lakh be provided to the victim's family. The Karbi Anglong District NSUI also expressed solidarity with the victim's family and lit candles at the Congress office premises at Diphu. Likewise, candlelight programme was also held at various places of the district against the spine-chilling incident.

In Diphu, various women, student and social organizations have condemned the incident and demanded immediate and appropriate action against the culprits. Chairperson of Women Commission and MAC of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Seema Ronghangpi, while condemning the incident, demanded justice for the victim.

"It is a heinous crime committed by the Borthakur family by torturing Sumila Ronghangpi and killing her. It is learnt that Prakash Chandra Borthakur and his son Nayan Jyoti Borthakur while torturing Sumila, poured kerosene on her body and burnt her alive," Ronghangpi said in her Facebook post.

KAAC CEM Tuliram Ronghang also sent an financial assistance of Rs 1 Lakh through Abhijt Kro, Ex-President, Nagaon Karbi Students Association to bring back the mortal remains of Sumila Ronghangpi which reached her native village on Friday.
