LAKHIMPUR: Resentment over draft proposal on delimitation of assembly and Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam continued in Lakhimpur district.

After the people dwelling in Ghunasuti area, this time, the people of Pub Telahi Gaon Panchayat (GP) have expressed strong reaction over the proposal of including the said GP in 75 Nowboicha (SC) LAC by excluding the same from present No. 111 Lakhimpur (headquarter) LAC. Notably, the entire Telahi Development Block of Lakhimpur district, which is constituted with 6 GPs, viz— Pub Telahi, Madhya Telahi, Uttar Telahi, Panigaon and Pachim Telahi and Lohit Khabolu and now a part of present No. 111 Lakhimpur (headquarter) LAC, is proposed to include in newly delimited 75 Nowboicha (SC) LAC. At this, reaction prevails among the people residing in the said development block, voters of which are the determining factor in every assembly election regarding the results of the LAC concerned.

Strongly opposing the draft proposal, the people of the Pub Telahi GP initiated a protest programme on Tuesday. The protesters declared that Pub Telahi would never be allowed to include in Nowboicha LAC at any cost. They demanded the Election Commission of India (ECI) to retain the said GP in Lakhimpur LAC. Otherwise, the people of the GP would boycott the upcoming Lok Sabha and assembly election as they declared.

In support of the demand, they shouted number of slogans during the demonstration and slammed the ECI and Government of Assam for adopting the proposal to include Pub Telahi in Nowboicha LAC. Taking part in the demonstration, social worker Robin Doley, Jit Kumar Pegu, Abinash Doley, Rewot Doley, Badan Doley, Achinta Pegu, Ajoy Doley delivered protest lecture. They demanded the withdrawal of the draft proposal of including the Pub Telahi in Nowboicha LAC ‘which was taken during the delimitation process done by people having no knowledge about the geography of the GP’.
