Demise of eminent litterateur Homen Borgohain condoled across Assam

LAKHIMPUR: One of the internationally acclaimed intellectual figures of the State, noted Assamese litterateur, journalist, former president of Axam Xahitya Xabha, Sahitya Akademi Award winner, Homen Borgohain's death was deeply mourned by people, organizations and institutions across Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts on Wednesday. As soon as the news of the demise of the intellectual figure spread in the morning, a pall of gloom cast across the undivided district of Lakhimpur.

Born at Baligaon under Dhakuakhana subdivision on December 7 in 1932, Homen Borgohain is regarded to be the pride of Lakhimpur district. He started his academic life at Dhakuakhana Government MV School and concluded it with a good career from then Cotton College. During his service life, Borgohain served as a teacher at Dhakuakhana Higher Secondary School (then High School) also in addition to working as an Assam Civil Service officer briefly. Extending mammoth contribution to Assamese literature and journalism, Homen Borgohain wrote 11 novels, several short stories and poetry. He won the Sahitya Akademi in 1978 for his novel Pita Putra but returned the award in 2015 to protest the growing intolerance in India. Borgohain first edited Assamese weekly newspaper Nilachal and later he edited the weekly Nagarik. Afterwards, he served as a senior staff member of Bengali daily newspaper Ajkal. The writer was serving as the editor-in-chief of Assamese daily Niyomiya Barta until his death. His notable literary work include Pita-Putra, Atmanusandhan, Matsyagandha, Dhumuha aru Ramdhenu, Saudor Puteke Nao Meli Jaai and Subala.

While expressing profound grief at his demise, the North Lakhimpur regional unit of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) organized public shradhanjali programme at Main Chariali of North Lakhimpur town at mid-day on Wednesday. Attending the event, the activists of the organization and his admirers and followers lit earthen lamps praying for the eternal peace of the departed soul. On the other hand, social institution Mangalbodh Jagaran Kendra organized a condolence meeting at its office wherein one-minute silence was observed with prayer for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

In addition to them, All Assam Unemployed Association president Dharmendra Deuri, general secretary Jiban Rajkhowa, North Lakhimpur Press Club president Sailen Baruah, secretary Karuna Krishna Nath, Lakhimpur District Journalists' Association secretary Manoj Borpatra Gohain, and many other prominent persons, institutions and organizations across the district expressed deep condolence at the demise of Homen Borgohain.

On the other hand, the news of the demise of the intellectual figure seemed to be a big shock for the people of his birthplace Dhakuakhana. Receiving the unexpected news of his demise, Homen Borgohain Trust, Dhakuakhana Subdivisional Unit of AASU, Dhakuakhana Businessman Union expressed grief and organized public shradhanjali programmes at their own offices following COVID-19 protocol. The trainees of Dhakuakhana Normal School expressed condolence organizing condolence meeting through Google Meet. Moreover, Dhakuakhana Sakha Xahitya Xabha secretary Dr. Jitu Kumar Chamuah, Dhakuakhana Press Guild president Alok Chamuah, secretary Rajib Baruah, Dhakuakhana Higher Secondary School, Dhakuakhana Grantha Mela Samiti president Dr. Girin Gogoi, secretary Ritu Kumar Das, Pachim Dhakuakhana Sakha Xahitya Xabha president Mihir Chetia, secretary Ritul Dihingia, Dhakuakhana Phat Bihu Samiti secretary Nara Gogoi, Dhakuakhana Block Congress Committee president Tarun Chetiya also mourned the demise of Homen Borgohain.

JAGIROAD: The Jagiroad unit of the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) has condoled the demise of eminent litterateur and former president of AXX, Homen Borgohain on Wednesday.

The president and secretary of Jagiroad Sakha Xahitya Xabha, Harmohan Kalita and Dr Dipak Jyoty Borua respectively, expressed deep sorrow and said that the death of the litterateur was ann irreparable loss to Assamese society. His demise was also deeply condoled by Jagiroad Lekhika Samaroh Samity, Jagiroad Press Club, all other media clubs of Jagiroad and other organizations.

MORIGAON: Karunadhara Trust, Morigaon unit expressed condolence over the demise of eminent litterateur and journalist Homen Borgohain.

In a press statement, Karunadhara Trust, Morigaon Zila Sahayak Committee (MZSC) led by president Ashok Deka and secretary Mileswar Pator expressed great condolence over the demise of the former president of Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) and prayed for peace of the departed soul. The organization flew the flag at half mast on Wednesday to pay respect to the renowned litterateur. A shraddhanjali programme will be organized on Thursday maintaining all COVID-19 protocol at its office Nipun Deka Smriti Bhavan.
