KOKRAJHAR: Boro Kachari Welfare Autonomous Council (BKWAC) and United Bodo People’s Organization (UBPO) on Sunday expressed deep sorrow over the demise of great social activist of Jonai sub division of village Silikhaguri of Dhemaji district-Tulsi Basumatary. A cancer patient, Basumatary died on Sunday at Assam Medical College and Hospital, Dibrugargh around noon. He leaves behind his wife, four sons, a daughter and a host of family members. He was 76. He was the father of UBPO president Manuranjan Basumatary.

The family of BKWAC expressed sorrow over his demise. The general secretary of UBPO, Pitambar Brahma said the Bodos in BKWAC had lost a great social activist who had made a lot of contribution to the society. Brahma in his short message said that Basumatary was associated with a number Bodo organizations. He was executive member of Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS), Dhemaji district committee in 1973, he established Silikhaguri village in 1979 under Jonai Jonai Anchalik, founded Silikhaguri Bodo medium LP School in 1981 and became president of Silikhaguri Primary School Managing committee, joined PTCA in 1982-83, became president of Gaon Panchayat from 1990 to 1995 and became member of ITDP and TAD Board in those years. Besides, he played vital role during the statehood movement launched by BLT. He was the proud father of the president of UBPO, Manuranjan Basumatary who is running the organization with great responsibility.

EM of BKWAC Anil Basumatary told The Sentinel that Tulsi Basumatary was a guide for the Bodos of greater Jonai and Simen Chapori areas. He said the BKWAC felicitated him during the celebration of Independence Day in Sanjari Nwgwr by BKWAC in 2022 for his dedicated services to the society. Basumatary said that Tulsi Basumatary was suffering from cancer and battling for life for the last six months.
