‘Demolish Taj Mahal’: Assam BJP MLA Urges Investigation On Shah Jahan-Mumtaz Love

GUWAHATI: Rupjyoti Kurmi, a BJP lawmaker from Assam, made a strange demand on Wednesday (April 5).

Rupjyoti Kurmi has called for an investigation to determine whether or not Shah Jahan loved his wife Mumtaz in the 17th century. Assam BJP legislator Rupjyoti Kurmi argued that Shah Jahan’s intention should be investigated to see whether or not he actually loved Mumtaz.

"If Shah Jahan truly loved Mumtaz and built the Taj Mahal for her, why did he marry four others?" the Assam BJP member further questioned.

Additionally, he said that the Taj Mahal was built with the money of the Hindu monarchs of the time.

In particular, on April 4, he urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take into consideration razing sites like the Taj Mahal, Qutub Minar, and Red Fort. Also, the Assam MLA urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish temples where these monuments currently exist.

"I implore PM Modi to destroy sites like the Qutub Minar and Taj Mahal and establish temples in their place," Kurmi remarked. He continued by saying that the temple's design should be unique among all other institutions and establishments.

The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum made of ivory-white marble that is located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, on the Yamuna River's right bank. To house the mausoleum of his favourite wife, Mumtaz, Shah Jahan, the fifth Mughal emperor, ordered its construction in 1631.

The grave of Shah Jahan is also located there. The tomb is the focal point of a complex that spans 17 hectares (42 acres) and is surrounded on three sides by formal gardens. The complex also includes a mosque and a guest house.

The Taj Mahal was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 because it was "the jewel of Muslim art in India and one of the most revered works of art in human history."

Many people believe it to be the finest example of Mughal architecture and a representation of India's long history. The Taj Mahal draws more than 6 million visitors annually and was named one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
