LAKHIMPUR: A programme on demonstration on rice-value-chain was conducted on Wednesday by Assam Agricultural University-Zonal Research Station, North Lakhimpur at village Bocha Gaon under Assam Agribusiness and Rural Transformation Project (APART).

A total of 50 participants attended the training programme. The programme started with a brief introduction on the ‘Rice Value Chain’ by Dr Yater Das, Junior Scientist (PBG), AAU-ZRS, North Lakhimpur, where she highlighted the objective of the training programme. The technical session was carried out by Ankita Sahu, Researcher, IRRI, APART. She explained about the mechanical method of paddy cultivation and discussed functions of different machines used from sowing to harvesting along with post-harvest technologies.

Post-harvest loss has a significant share in the total loss percentage. Therefore, the use of machines, such as combine harvesters, helps significantly to reduce harvesting loss in paddy. Towards the end of the programme, she demonstrated usage of Moisture Meter to check grain moisture and Super Bag for seed storage keeping the grain moisture intact. Measuring grain moisture is important to prevent quantitative (e.g. shattering loss) as well as qualitative losses (e.g. discolouration, broken grains, etc). At the end of the technical session, participants gave satisfactory feedback as they became aware of modern technologies for paddy cultivation which aim at cost minimization and profit maximization. They also showed their interest to go for mechanization in the coming Sali season.
