DIGBOI: Based on the announcement of Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday morning at the grenade explosion site in Digboi's Tingrai, the one-time financial assistance to the next of the victim's kin was formally handed over to both the bereaved families of the deceased here on Sunday afternoon.

A powerful hand grenade was lobbed in a hardware shop at Tingrai Bazar on Friday at around 1 pm wherein the salesman Surajit Talukdar (22) and a customer Sanjib Singh (25) lost their lives in the explosion. Deceased Singh died on the spot while Talukdar succumbed to the injuries the same evening at AMCH Dibrugarh.

Rameswar Teli, the Member of Parliament, minister Sanjay Kishan and local MLA Suren Phukan handed over the benefit worth Rs 5 lakh each to the dependents of both the grenade victims, Surajit Talukldar of Tingrai Bazar area and Sanjib Singh of Hukanpukhuri area under Digboi police station.

"Upon the responsibilities entrusted by the Chief Minister of Assam on Saturday morning to coordinate with and attend to the needs of the grief-stricken family members of both the explosion-affected families, we have acted immediately and have given the cheques today," said Digboi legislator Suren Phukan.

"I am grateful to the Chief Minister who acted and responded immediately to my appeal and paid a practical visit to the explosion site on Saturday –the very next day of the explosion. Beside the ex-gratia amount, we are also exploring all possibilities to help the members of the affected families if they could be accommodated into any income-generating ventures in the days to come," said Rameswar Teli. "I believe the local MLA Suren Phukan will be readily available to serve the needy people as far as possible," he added.

Deceased Singh is survived by his wife, parents and a one-year-old child while Talukdar was the only bread-earner of the family and is survived by his aged parents.
