LAKHIMPUR: The deprived ANMs (Assam Nurses, Midwives) of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district, as well as of the State, have demanded the Government of Assam and Health Department to recruit them in government job at the earliest.

Regarding the demand, the deprived ANMs of the both district addressed a press conference, convened at North Lakhimpur Press Club on Sunday. Representing the ANMs concerned in the press conference, Popi Nath, Ranju Baruah, Bindu Kour, Binita Dutta informed the media persons that those ANMs had been deprived of government jobs for around 8 to 10 years despite they successfully completed ANM training from the government recognized institutions.

“There are almost 8000 ANMs in the State, who completed the three-year long ANM training in in 2015 from the medical institutions duly recognized by the Government of Assam. After our batch no ANM training was held in government recognized institutions. But we have been deprived of government job for a long time due to government apathy,” Popi Nath said while addressing the press conference.

She further added that though the deprived ANMs of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji district as well as their State level organization had submitted consecutive prayers and petitions to the department concerned and to the Government of Assam praying for their recruitment, they were not potent enough to draw government’s attention in this regard.

“We had also a dream of being recruited in government jobs. We already spent almost 10 years with this expectation. Now our age will be over for government job very soon. We all hail from poor families. After the successful completion of the ANM training, we expected government jobs to manage the pecuniary difficulties of our families. But our dream could never come true due to government negligence. Under such circumstances, uncertainty looms large over our future,” Popi Nath asserted.

The deprived ANMs further informed that the Government of Assam had recruited a few ANMs in the past years and their number was less. “But the matter of grave concern is that the ANMs completing their training in the private institutions have managed to get appointment in government jobs during those recruitment initiatives while we have been deprived,” Popi Nath stated while expressing resentment over the issue.

The deprived ANMs disclosed that ‘places of works’ for some ANMs have been shown in the Nurse and Midwife Register Passbook provided by Indian Nursing Council, though they have not been posted anywhere by the government. In connection with the ‘false record’ in the passbook concerned, the deprived ANMs expressed their astonishment and called upon the government to clear its stand in this regard.

In the press conference, the deprived ANMs declared that they would be compelled to take to the streets unless they were recruited at the earliest. They sought the intervention of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
