MANGALDAI: The unprecedented second wave of flood in Darrang district has taken a devastating turn inundating a total of 221 villages and affecting a total of 2,79,001 population.

The turbulent River Nonoi has breached its embankment in five stretches, of which three are at Kalitapara, Kacharidol and Kaikiapara under Patharighat Revenue Circle and two stretches at Solpam and Chengeliapara under Sipajhar Revenue Circle. The stretch of National Highway-15 from Piporadokan to Saktola bridge has been closed for the second day. The diversion of NH-15 has also been submerged under flood water causing disruption of road communication.

Mangaldai , the district headquarters town, after the witnessing the devastating flood in 1988, for the second time has been facing the wrath of nature caused by both the surging rivers –the Mangaldai and the Bega. All the wards of the town have been submerged under waist-deep water which led to evacuation by the staff of SDRF.

Former legislator Guru Jyoti Das was seen taking an active role in evacuating the stranded people in different areas of town. Parliamentarian Dilip Saikia, Deputy Commissioner Pranab Kumar Sarma, Superintendent of Police Raj Mohan Ray also visited different flood-affected areas to supervise the rescue operation.

The district administration has opened up a total number of 13 relief camps in different locations with a total of 5075 inmates. The road communication from Mangaldai to Kalaigaon via MB Road has been disrupted in many places.
