Devotees Celebrate Chhath Puja With Enthusiasm Across Assam

SARUPATHAR: Chhath Puja is an ancient Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Surya and Chhath Maiya (known to be the wife of Surya). The devotees of Sarupathar under Dhansiri subdivision offered prayers to the rising sun and the devotees also took a dip in the holy water. The devotees started Chhath Puja with nahay-khay on Saturday.

Around 3,000 devotees are expected to perform puja at Turung gaonali Ghat due to a small area allotted to them. Meanwhile, the puja was organized in the town area of Sarupathar and at Dhansiri river parghat. Some devotees performed the puja at their own residence or nearby pound. The devotees also prepared prasad made of wheat.

A devotee said, “This festival is dedicated to the Sun God who is the source of all power. He is worshipped along with Chhathi Maiya for the well-being and prosperity of human beings.”

DEMOW: Chhath Puja was celebrated with religious fervour and devotion on the bank of Demow River, Dehajan area, on the bank of Deroi River, on the bank of Athabari Borpukhuri, Nitaipukhuri area along with other areas on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday evening, the devotees thronged the ghats to perform rituals and at night cultural programme was organized near Demow River. On Sunday midnight, the devotees lit earthen lamps near the bank of the river and prayed. After the end of the Puja, the prasad called thekuwa was distributed among the people.
