DOOMDOOMA: Director General of Police (DGP), Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta inaugurated the newly-constructed building of Doomdooma Police Station (PS) under the scheme 'Mission for Overall Improvement of Thana for Responsive Image' (MOITRI) on Wednesday.

The building was constructed at a cost of around Rs 2.43 crore and has all modern facilities like solar panel at the rooftop, creche room for babies and reception counter with waiting lounge etc. Addressing the inaugural function which was presided over by Arjun Baruah, president, Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha (TZXX), DGP Mahanta said that 100 such police station buildings under MOITRI would be constructed all over Assam. He laid great emphasis on police-public relation and said that the department was trying to introduce a Service Delivery system whereby the police personnel would give home delivery of items like Post Mortem (PM) report, Accident report etc to distressed persons. He also said that for smooth functioning of the police stations, an amount of Rs. 2.5 lakh would be provided to the Officer-in-charge of each PS. Similarly financial help would be provided to the Superintendent of Police (SP) of the police districts as well.

Steps would also be taken to give training for improvement of writing of case diaries so that the trial cases became fair enough to deliver justice to the people. The DGP divulged that while crime rate was decreasing, the unnatural death cases like suicides were increasing at an alarming rate in the State as a post-COVID scenario. As for example, he pointed out that the increase of suicidal cases was as high as 50 per cent in 2022 compared to what it was in 2021. Similarly he expressed concern at the ever increasing incidence of crime against children and sexual harassment.

For enhancing the capacity of policing, he said that the Outpost (OP) would be upgraded to PS and in view of ever increasing traffic jam at Doomdooma, he assured to sanction a traffic unit at Doomdooma PS in response to public demand. The DGP who was overwhelmed at being felicitated by innumerable socio-cultural organizations, also assured to preserve the old Doomdooma PS Building, which was once a fort during Ahom rule, as heritage site.

In the beginning, Tinsukia Superintendent of Police Debajit Deori welcomed the guests while Deputy Inspector General (DIG), NE Region, J Doley in his brief speech said that insurgency and allurement of a section of youths towards it and the lack of skills among the youths for employability was the cause for worry for the administration as well to the police.
