GUWAHATI: A college student of Lakhimpur district's Dhakuakhana, who suffered critical injuries after being attacked by a machete in Dhemaji on Saturday, died at Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH) where she was undergoing treatment following the incident.
The deceased girl Nandita Saikia, who hails from Naba Kathbari village in Dhakuakhana, was a B.A. third-semester student at Maridhal College in Dhemaji.
According to reports, Nandita along with her fellow classmate Kashmira Dutta and Kashmira's father Deba Dutta was attacked by one Rintu Sarma with a machete at Dhemaji bus stand in broad daylight on Saturday. The three injured were immediately rushed to the Dhemaji Civil Hospital. However, considering Nandita's health condition, she was sent to Assam Medical College Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh.
On Monday, Nandita's health deteriorated immensely and she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The attacker Rintu Sharma has been arrested by police.
A person Greene Chowdhury has narrated the incident on Twitter and urged chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for strict action regarding the matter. As per her Twitter profile, she is a 'Sevika', State BJP Mahila Morcha Assam Pradesh Social Media Co-Incharge.
the Lakhimpur district has seen a number of incidents related to crimes against women in the past few years. A college student got seriously injured when a youth of the same college, poured acid over her in October 2018 as her family had allegedly refused his marriage proposal. The incident took place at Pathali Pahar in Lakhimpur. As per reports, the girl, a student of Sankardev College, was returning home with a friend after attending classes when two youths, who came in a car, met them. The youth (who poured acid on the girl) asked her to sit in the car and on her refusal to do so, poured acid on her body.
The accused youth's family had reportedly gone to the girl's house a few days before the incident with a proposal of marriage but her family turned it down.
