SILCHAR: The Director of Higher Education Dr. Dharmakanta Mili issued a seven point show cause notice to the Principal of Cachar College Dr Siddhartha Shankar Nath on Thursday. Teachers of the prestigious College were on strike for last one week demanding the removal of the Principal, who as they alleged, had provoked a group of students to harass and threaten the teachers. In this backdrop, DHE in his show cause notice, had asked Nath to furnish his reply within 10 days. Teachers would call off their agitation on Friday after briefing the media, a source informed.

The show cause notice pointed at the holding of an irregular governing body meeting with 29 members including two Grade II non sanctioned staff which violated the Rule 3 of Assam Provincialized College Management Rules. The notice further alleged "insubordination towards appointing authority". Nath allegedly overlooked the letter from the DHE regarding Assistant Professor Nayana Goswami. Further Nath, as mentioned in the notice, intimated Nayana Goswami by threatening to hold up her salary and annual increment.

Further the notice said that Dr. Nath had violated section 353 of IPC by illegally preventing a government official Dr. Ananda Ghose from discharge of his duty as a teacher by forcefully denying him entry into the college premises for more than one year. Nath had also held the salary of Ghose for two months without any authorisation from the higher authorities. Notice further raised question on the controversial appointment of one Kanchan Nath, reportedly a cousin of the Principal. Kanchan Nath, brought from outside of Assam, was allowed by the Principal to clear bills and vouchers amounting to high amounts.
