LAKHIMPUR: Nandita Saikia is no more. The Dhemaji attack victim finally lost her final battle of life in a sad turn of events. She breathed her last on Wednesday around 1:10 pm in Brahmaputra Hospital in Dibrugarh where she had been under treatment and recuperating for five days after being fatally attacked by one Rintu Sarma in Dhemaji town.

Nandita Saikia, daughter of Nabin Saikia, resident of Naba Kathbari village under Dhakuakhana subdivision of Lakhimpur district, was attacked by Rintu Sarmah in Dhemaji town on August 21 in broad daylight. In the attack, one more girl named Kashmina Dutta and her father were also critically injured. Nandita and Kashmina were students of degree fifth semester at Moridhol College in Dhemaji district while Rintu Sarmah is a library assistant in the same college. The three injured were immediately rushed to the Dhemaji Civil Hospital. However, considering Nandita's health condition, she was shifted to Dibrugarh for advanced treatment. Dhemaji police arrested Rintu Sarmah later. He attacked Nandita Saikia with a machete as she did not reciprocate his proposal.

Following the heinous incident, widespread protests have broken out in various parts of the State seeking justice for the victim as well as stringent punishment for the accused, Rintu Sarmah. Moreover, all unanimously prayed for her recovery.

Nandita was a meritorious student, a promising actress, dancer, recitation artiste and a good weaver excelling in handicraft. Her demise has cast a pall of gloom in entire Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts and a good number of organizations and individuals have expressed grief at her demise.
