DIBRUGARH: "Dibrugarh will have two universities soon. The discussion on upgradation of DHS Kanoi College to university level is in process," said Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan.
Laying the foundation stone of a new girls' hostel of DHSK College, Phukan, said that the need had arisen for two universities for higher studies in Dibrugarh. To meet the demands of students, Kanoi College will soon be upgraded to a university. He said that once Kanoi College was fully developed, there would be two universities in the same constituency. As Kanoi College has the proud history of association with the establishment of Dibrugarh University, Phukan said that he would feel proud if such a college was upgraded to a university.
The Principal of the college, Dr Sashi Kanta Saikia offered his heartfelt thanks to Prasanta Phukan for laying the foundation stone in spite of his busy schedule. The Principal also offered his gratitude to MLA Phukan for all-round support and cooperation towards uplifting the college to university level.
The president of the governing body, Abhimanyu Baruah was also present on the occasion. He said that as the number of students was increasing day by day, a girls' hostel was needed and he expected that this newly-constructed building would be able to solve the problems of the girl students. The secretary of students' union, Ankur Moran pointed out a number of problems of the college and submitted the statement to MLA Phukan. The warden of girls' hostel, Urmila Ramchiary felicitated the guests on the occasion.
