DHUBRI: The BJP and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) appears to be head on in Dhubri Assembly constituency as poll campaign ended on Sunday evening. Both the parties left no stone unturned to woo the voters.
BJP candidate Dr. Debamoy Sanyal hit the road on foot led with district-level leaders of all wings of the party.
Party workers and supporters in all the sixteen wards of Dhubri town campaigned vigorously appealing to the people to vote for the party.
On the other hand, AIUDF candidate Nazrul Haque Bepari was not much seen campaigning in the town. But he was running from one village to other where the AIUDF has stronghold. He held small meetings rather than organizing big rallies, while AIUDF supremo and Dhubri MP, Badruddin Ajmal is doing rally after rally in different places of Dhubri district including one at Lakhiganj in Bilasipara (East) constituency on Sunday.
Since independence, Dhubri had remained a strong fortress of the Congress till Dhruba Kumar Sen of BJP defeated Nazibul Umar of Congress in 1991, but Nazibul Umar won twice by defeating the BJP.
However, Congress strong fortress collapsed when AIUDF (then UDF) emerged in the political battle in 2006. It won the Dhubri seat thrice since then, and this time, sitting legislator of AIUDF, Nazrul Haque Bepari is contesting for this seat again.
