DHUBRI: The Dhubri Deputy Commissioner’s input led to the dismantling of an illegal sawmill and seizure of timber and sawing machines in Agomoni of Dhubri district a couple of days ago. The two sawing machines – horizontal and band sawing - were seized along with a large number of timber logs and sawn wood from M/s Sen Saw Mill. The illegal timber logs were allegedly brought from the Guma Reserve Forest nearby. Owner of the sawmill, Dipak Chandra Das was detained, interrogated and later arrested, a forest official informed.

Having received secret input from Dhubri Deputy Commissioner Anant Lal Gyani, Agomoni Circle Officer Chiranjeet Das raided the sawmill located near Sagolia and dismantled the sawmill which allegedly had been running from many years.

When contacted, Dhubri Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Biswajit Roy said that it was a registered saw mill but the owner allegedly used to saw logs brought to the mill illegally. “Some problems are there in the mill. Details of seizure have come to me and I am investigating the matter,” Roy further informed.

There are many illegal timber markets in Dhubri district, including Falimari village near Dhubri town and Phulkatari at Panbari. These markets are allegedly run under the nose of forest officials, a source alleged.
