Dhubri girl Dipmala Mazumdar wins eye care award

DHUBRI: Dipmala Mazumdar of Dhubri town has won the platinum award of the All India Ophthalmological Society-Indian Journal of Ophthalmology for her research work for the year 2017-2018.

The award was presented to her and co-researchers by Noble laureate Kailash Satyarthi in Indore recently. Dipmala’s research was based on the prevalence of visual impairment which is increasing all around the world and India is one of the countries with the highest rates of visual impairment.

To help assess visual impairment accurately, Dipmala with her co-researchers from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, have successfully developed a standard logMAR visual acuity chart based on the National Academy of Sciences–National Research Council recommendation in Indian languages (Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Urdu, Kannada, Malayalam, and Assamese).

When contacted by The Sentinel, Dipmala told this scribe over phone from Chennai that her work has been highly appreciated and hailed at the national and international level as this was for the first time that logMAR visual acuity charts based on Indian languages has been developed successfully.

“I am very satisfied that now with the help of visual acuity charts based on Indian languages, it could be easier to treat patients with visual impairment. Moreover, receiving the prestigious platinum award from the hands of Noble laureate Kailash Satyarthi was a huge honour to me and my co-researchers”, she added.
