DHUBRI: Dhubri Police seized over 125 cattle from the Indo-Bangladesh international Border and riverine area in the last 10 days.

Based on tip-off, on the night of June 12, two boats laden with cattle were seized. A senior police officer said that two Sub-Inspectors, Prashanta Das and Chanakya Das of Dhubri Police Station were sent to intercept the boats. Accordingly, after a hot chase, one boat carrying cattle was intercepted on the river near Birshing Char under Dhubri Police Station. When the police party tried to stop the boat, the cattle smugglers on the boat retaliated and attacked the police party with dagger, sticks and other sharp weapons, the officer further informed.

He added that seeing no other way out, the police started firing. Officers on duty fired six rounds of ammunition. However, two cattle smugglers managed to jump in the water, he added.

The officer said, "Thirty cattle on the boat were seized. The boat was totally damaged in the operation and sank on the spot. The cattle were brought to Dhubri and kept in safe custody. In the last 10 days, police seized over 125 cattle and operations in different points still continue."
