Dibrugarh BJP leader arrested for allegedly murdering wife

Guwahati: Dibrugarh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Secretary Nayan Das on Sunday was arrested on the charges of murdering his wife, Tora Das.

On July 1, Tora Das, wife of the prominent Dibrugarh BJP leader, was recovered hanging in her residence at Banipur under mysterious circumstances. After an initial round of investigation, suspicion fell on Nayan, and he has now been arrested by the local authorities. There is a suspicion that the local BJP leader tried to make his wife's death appear like suicide, reports said.

According to per reports, Tora Das was the adopted daughter of Dibrugarh BJP MLA Prashanta Phukan. However, Phukan had cut off his ties with Das after her marriage six years ago. The couple also has a 4-year-old daughter.

"He has been arrested and has been sent to judicial custody. The body has been sent for post-mortem and once the post-mortem report is out, we will be filing a charge-sheet in this matter. At the same time, we have also recorded the statements of over 10 eyewitnesses", Sreejith T, the Dibrugarh Superintendent of Police informed The Sentinel Digital.
