DIBRUGARH: Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmal Kanoi College celebrated its 78th foundation day with pomp and gaiety. The function was attended by students, teachers, non-teaching staff, retired professors, and special guests. It is noteworthy that Dibrugarh Hanumanbax Surajmal Kanoi College, also known as DHSK College, was established on June 15, 1945, to cater to the higher education needs of Upper Assam. Initially affiliated with Calcutta University, it later became affiliated with Gauhati University in 1948 and is currently affiliated with Dibrugarh University. The college has been instrumental in the establishment of other higher learning institutions, including Dibrugarh University, founded in 1965.

The day-long programme began with a formal address by the principal, Dr. Sashi Kanta Saikia. Dr. Saikia warmly welcomed the gathering and provided a quick overview of the college’s history.

The function was inaugurated by Prof. Surajit Borkotoky, the Dean of Students’ Affairs and a mathematics professor at Dibrugarh University. Prof. Borkotoky expressed his immense joy at the institution’s long and successful journey and shared his personal and family attachment to the premier educational institute of the region.

The highlights of the function included the conferment of the Dr. Lakshmiprasad Dutta Memorial Award and the Ashwini Charan Choudhury Award, the release of the College Newsletter, and a talk on the topic “Future of Higher Education in the Light of Sustainable Development.”

The newly instituted Ashwini Charan Choudhury Award was presented to Dr. Sarbeswar Bhuyan, a popular and well-known local medical doctor. Dr. Bhuyan, a general surgeon at Assam Medical College, was acknowledged for his remarkable service to humanity. He expressed his gratitude upon receiving the award, stating, “As I receive this award, I feel humbled, indebted, and an increased sense of responsibility.” The Dr. Lakshmiprasad Dutta Memorial Award of 2019 and 2022 were presented to Gurpreet Kaur Virdi and Debasruti Deka for achieving the highest marks among all successful candidates from DHSK College in the BA Final Examination under Dibrugarh University.

The highlight of the day was a talk on “Future of Higher Education in the Light of Sustainable Development” delivered by Prof. S.P. Singh, the Vice-Chancellor of Assam Royal Global University, Guwahati.
